Fayaway is wearing a shirt and sweater by one of our favorite brands, Cheap Monday!
Fayaway is an indie rock band from Wilmington, North Carolina, composed of two (and sometimes three) members: L'Che, who is in charge of tech, origami, and continuity, J.J., who controls the singing, jangling, and intensity, and (sometimes) Cilla, who contributes to the vocals and lowness. They're in between websites right now, but you can still download some of their songs right here!
Fayaway's song "Defending Your Life" was used for the soundtrack in Jessie Williams's moving portfolio. You can buy some of Jessie's original hand made designs here.
Edge of Urge: Do you see any connection between music and fashion?
Fayaway: Absolutely. Those two have a relationship that goes back quite a ways--the
first fashion magazines in 17th century France were also the first music
magazines. Music just loves dramatic visual accompaniment (manic pianists,
capes and sequins, Mike Score's* hair).
E: Do you ever wear costumes on stage?
F: No. But we should. Costume bands are thin on the ground these days. Though
if we were to wear them, we'd probably dress like extras from "The Grapes of
Wrath".
E: Who is your style idol?
F: Noel Coward and Gene Hackman.
E: What do you have against spandex?
F: Not a thing. Truly. It does wonders with denim.
E: What's it gonna take to get you into spandex?
F: A time machine.
E: How do you feel about tight pants?
F: Eager, concerned.
E: Whose posters did you have on your wall growing up?
F: Charlie Brown, R.E.M.
E: What is your state of mind when playing/singing?
F: Fugue state.
E: What do you think 'edge of urge' means?
F: That the most dangerous things are often the most beautiful.
*Mike Score was the keyboardist and lead singer for the band Flock of Seagulls.
