I walk the streets alone each night. The cold air no longer abrades my lungs like sandpaper, and the snow I once trudged through has become like grass to the bare foot. I am used to the winter now, and I am used to being alone too. I am honest with myself and I don't pretend to know my surroundings like distant relatives anymore. I am true to my past in all of its hideousness. I have known the life of a con artist in my marriages, stealing from the sweet fidelity of patient women. I am not a good man, but I have received a good man's pay: I have received graciousness like sunlight, daily meriting favorable rays disproportionate to my past.
I have brother who is completely unlike me. My brother is a good man, you see. He is successful at his trade, and in his marriage he is content. He does not walk cold streets nor trudge through snow, for his home has been made with honesty and virtue. He gives of himself relentlessly, and without partiality. He is an icon to be imitated, a father to learn from, and a friend to rely upon.
But were you to ask him of his grace and benevolence he might answer first with his eyes. For, of him, they speak loudest. They might show that he actually believes he is the bad man. He does not rest in grace-received as I do. The bad man always needs grace, and he receives it eventually. The good man, who always gives grace, tends to disqualify himself from receiving it back. He falls apart, internally, and believes in secret that he is unworthy. Grace is, for the good man, a paradoxical pitfall.
But if grace was such a misery it would not be grace at all, for even the good man needs grace.
